Here is an activity that you can do with your kiddies at home which is fun, enjoyable, educational and teaches them the life skill of shopping.
This is also a great activity to do with the kiddies to help them understand what happens in a grocery store and the steps that are involved.
You need:Print off the materials document below: Shop Keeper, cash register, trolley/basket, shopping bag, real life food/toy food
How to set up:
-Set up the play by placing the food signs along the table
-Set up the cash register with some money inside, a shopping bag and the Pay here sign.
-Encourage the child to lay out the food with you so that they are learning what foods go under what category. Talk about the food as you do this.
Now you are all set up... lets play
How to play:
-Sit down with the child and make a shopping list.
-Give the child a trolley/basket, their shopping list and some money.
-Get the child to go and pick up the items on their shopping list.
-When the child is finished get the child to come to the cash register with their food.
-Child will give the shop keeper their food, pay using their money and pack the food into their shopping bag.
Teach the child how to greet the shop keeper by prompting the child to say hello/wave, thank you and goodbye/wave.
This activity could be progressed by bringing the activity out of the home and into the grocery store setting. Help the child make the shopping list with you at home, going to the real life grocery store (when the current pandemic has ended) and allowing the child to participate in the weekly shop with you. They can find the items on the list, put them into the trolley, give the shop keeper the money and help pack the groceries into the bags.
