    Gross Motor Skills- Obstacle course

    in Helping each other out

    Obstacle Course

Area: PE, Gross Motor Skills, Fundamental Movement Skills,

You will need: items to crawl under, items to step up on, items to jump over, items to run in between.

    Examples:

These are just a few ideas of everyday items that you could use.

slide- get the kiddies to climb up and slide down

cones- lay them out for the kiddies to run in and out around them

boxes- get the kiddies to step up and jump off the box/use as cones/use two and put sweeping brush on top for the kiddies to crawl underneath

tunnels- for your kiddies to crawl through/ roll a ball through and get it at the other end

clothes drying horse- for the kiddies to crawl under

balance beam- for the kiddies to walk along

laundry basket- to throw a ball into/ to run around

shoes-to use as cones/to get the kiddies to put on as a task during the course

    stones- use as cones

coloured paper- green for go red for stop/use as stepping stones for the kiddies

empty toilet rolls- use as cones/ get children to thread them onto a rope

bag of pototoes- use as a cone/children jump over it like a hurdle

chairs- use as a cone/kiddies run around it/crawl through the legs of it

tables for kiddies to crawl under it/ climb over (small table)

trampoline- get the kiddies to jump a certain amount of times/crawl under it

Obstacle courses are a fun activity to do indoors and outdoors. It gives the children a run activity to follow while also working on their gross motor skills and fundamental movement skills.

Set up the course to suit your child's ability. Then add to it make it more advanced once the child is comfortable completing the course.

Lots of praise and encouragement while doing the course can help the kiddies and allow them to enjoy it.

Try to have something fun at the end of the course so that the child is motivated to get to the end such as the trampoline if your child loves that, they get sprayed with water at the end of the course if this is something they would enjoy or everyone gives a big cheer when the child finishes etc.

This great weather is a perfect opportunity to set up an obstacle course in your back garden to give your kiddies endless fun.

We look forward to seeing you get creative in creating your own obstacle courses over the next few days.

    Have fun!
